Chauntra – Old People´s Home

The home for Tibetan seniors in Chauntra near Dharamsala is one of the homes we have been working with for many years. They fall under the Social Affairs Department of the Tibetan Government-in-Exile.

The home in Chauntra is cozy and small, with around 25-30 seniors living there. They are facing minor problems which are related to construction matters. For example, the driveway was completely unpaved. At first they thought it would have a nice natural effect, but later it turned out to be dangerous for old women as they could slip and injure themselves.

The management plans to install outdoor lights so that residents can walk in the garden in the evenings and go around the prayer wheels instead of just being inside. And especially in winter, when the days are short and it is difficult for old women to be inside the building all the time.

This year we financially supported the replacement of windows that were very old, broken and warped.

In the past, we supported waste water management. Right next to the home is a farm where medicinal herbs are grown. The management of the home for the elderly sought funds to create a proper network for waste water, which would prevent the deterioration of the adjacent land for the cultivation of herbs.

During the year, the old people have a varied program. The management of the home prepares various celebrations or cultural events to enrich everyday life. Daily joint prayers and the celebration of important Buddhist holidays are a matter of course. He is constantly praying that His Holiness the Dalai Lama can return to Tibet. Next to this most important person in their life, they pray for their donors and all sentient beings.
